How Harley Quinn was Created
“It is to laugh, huh, Mistah J?” That was the first line of the iconic character Harley Quinn. This imposing character gained her famousity through the show called The Batman Animated Series in the 90’s. Writers Paul Dini and Bruce Timm were writing the episode The Joker’s Favor and they were thinking of giving Joker a female sidekick just for the episode.
They based Harley Quinn heavily on the voice actress Arleen Sorkin’s outfit in a soap opera called The Days of Our Lives. The reason why they based Harley off of the outfit was the fact she wore a two toned jester outfit in soap opera.
Later Bruce Timm asked Arleen Sorkin if she voice the character ( Bruce Timm and Arleen Sorkin were friends from college). After Arleen voiced the clown character and as soon as the episode aired people fell in love with bubbly character. So Paul Dini and Bruce Timm kept Harley Quinn. She later went on other animated show such as: Superman: the Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, and Batman Beyond: The Return of the Joker.
Since Harley Quinn was based off of Arleen’s outfit she had a stereotypical jester hat with two puff balls at the ends and the hat was split in the center vertically as well as the rest of her outfit. Since the outfit is split the two, the colors of the outfit were red and black. There is another split right under the breast near the ribcage and it goes horizontally. There was also a neck piece similar to a choker, but it goes down to the collar bone and has three puff balls back and front.
